Greg Oden was upset to hear of his former assistant coach’s passing last week. He shared that Maurice Lucas had been more than a coach to him; he had been a mentor and a father figure. Oden explained that Lucas had been the first to support him when he arrived in Chicago, and had invited him for dinners and holidays when he had no family in the area. He was also a leader on the court. Oden smiled while recalling his basic instructions; “Be aggressive. Go for everything.” He was a man Oden truly looked up to.
Lucas passed away at the age of 58 from bladder cancer. Coach Nate McMillan told the team that Lucas had wanted to go for a walk for quite a while, but had been unable to. After the meeting, Oden got up and just walked through Chicago in memory of Lucas, and thought back on the experiences they shared.

On Saturday, October 16th, the Portland Trailblazers, with whom Greg Oden plays as center, will battle the Golden State Warriors for a second pre-season game win. Their coach, Nate McMillan, says they have room to improve their rebounding. McMillan says that in order to strengthen their offense, the Blazers will begin setting plays that are more focused for certain players, which will help the team get the most from each member.

Aside from working on their game, the Blazers will be reaching out to the community by visiting Seattle’s Garfield High School, all-star guard Brandon Roy’s alma mater, for a 40 minute scrimmage. Tickets to the game cost 5 dollars, and all proceeds will be donated to the Garfield School Foundation. Roy, with the help of the Trailblazers, will be matching the proceeds with an additional 10,000 dollar donation to the foundation.

Playing alongside Greg Oden at no. 31 for the Portland Trail Blazers is Jeff Pendergraph, originally drafted by the Sacramento Kings of the 2009 NBA Draft. These draft rights were later traded to the Trail Blazers. In Arizona State University, Pendergraph played college basketball and in his sophomore season grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds in a 52-36 victory over Colgate. He signed his contract with the Trail Blazers in September 2009 with his first game against the Dallas Mavericks, scoring two points in four minutes. As well, in the last 2009-10 NBA season game, he scored a career-high 23 points.

In 2009, he was selected to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team and broke NBA rookie records for the amount of three-point field goals made, at 159!. He “hit a three-point field goal in 33 consecutive games.”

He is quick to the backboard and can manhandle most opponents that come his way. It’s for this reason that he was drafted by Portland in the first round of the 2007 NBA Draft.
